The Early Years

C.H. Bull Company was founded in 1930 by Charles H. Bull, as the San Francisco distributor for the Buda Company, a manufacturer of gasoline and diesel engines, jacks, and railroad equipment based in Harvey, Illinois. Automotive oil filters and friction materials were added in the early years, along with a shop for wholesale automotive and truck brake shoe and drum work. In 1934, the company was named one of the first representatives of the Young Radiator Company.

Charles’s son, Charles E. Bull, and son-in-law, Harry Sheppard, joined the company in the late 1940s following their service in the Marine Corps and Navy, respectively, in World War II. Our founder, Charles H. Bull, passed away in 1956 at the age of 76. He left the company with a legacy of honesty and integrity in business and responsiveness to customer needs.

The 1950s & ‘60s: Continuing Growth

C.H. Bull Company’s sales and personnel both grew in the 1950s. More contractor-related lines were added, including Barco Gasoline Hammers and Rammers, and Simplex/Pine Jacks. During this formative period, we recognized the need for a “system” approach to many of our customers’ needs. High tonnage, high-pressure jacking systems were sold or rented to such customers as CalTrans, Bechtel, Bigge, and many of the contractors in the early phase of BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) construction.

Our new systems approach was also applied to heat exchange equipment for cooling new, high-powered electronic systems such as the Varian Klystrons being used for satellite communications.

We soon outgrew our San Francisco facilities, and in 1966, we moved to a new building in South San Francisco Industrial Park. With the additions of top product lines, qualified personnel, and a major commitment to inventory, our growth continued.

Three Generations of Excellence

The third generation of the C.H. Bull family came on board in 1970 and now plays a major role in C.H. Bull Co. management. Stan Sheppard, our jacking systems specialist, serves as Vice President and Sales Manager. Andrew “Andy” Bull, after ten years of sales experience in the field, is now President and General Manager of the company.

On several occasions, C.H. Bull Co. has been named Top Distributor in the country by such companies as Enerpac and Greenlee Tool. Similar distinctions have been awarded by Young Radiator Company.
